OpenAI Is Teaching AI to Design the Chips of the Future

OpenAI and semiconductor software giant Synopsys have teamed up to build a new AI model that could change how computer chips are designed. OpenAI and Synopsys announced a multi-year partnership on September 30 to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized AI model built specifically for semiconductor design. Unlike a normal chatbot, GPT-Synopsys is being designed to work directly with Synopsys' electronic design automation (EDA) software — the tools engineers use to design and test complex computer chips. The model will be trained to understand chip-design tasks, operate the software, examine its results and repeatedly optimize designs. That could help engineers explore more possible designs while working on factors such as power, performance and chip size. Why this matters Modern chips can contain billions of transistors packed into an extremely small area. Designing them is a complicated process that can take engineers weeks, months or longer. OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman said the partnership is intended to help engineers move through the design process faster and ultimately produce better chips. Reuters reported that the companies expect the technology could potentially cut weeks or months from parts of the design process. But the AI will not simply design a chip and declare it ready for manufacturing. Synopsys says its traditional verification tools will continue checking the AI's work. These checks are important because a chip has to satisfy strict physical and engineering requirements before it can actually be manufactured. OpenAI and Synopsys will share revenue The partnership also includes a revenue-sharing arrangement. OpenAI will license Synopsys' EDA tools while developing the specialized model, and the companies plan to work together on bringing GPT-Synopsys to customers. The bigger picture is especially interesting: AI is no longer being used only to write software or generate content. Companies are increasingly trying to use AI to help build the physical hardware that powers AI itself. If GPT-Synopsys delivers on its goals, AI could become a much bigger part of the process behind the next generation of processors, accelerators and other advanced semiconductor technology. For now, the project is still being developed and tested. But the partnership marks a major step toward making AI a direct tool in the engineering of future computer chips.
